Interview – RJ Cusyk

Michael Pierson’s entire life is built on a routine: he wakes up, works out, goes to work, goes home, goes to bed. In his dreams, he is a vigilante fighting against the rapists and murderers plaguing the city. What happens when his dreams begin to intersect with his reality? After saving a young girl from being raped, Michael begins acting upon his primal urges. Is this really happening or is it all in his head? Michael must confront the demons in his heart and in his mind before he can face the dangerous criminals in the city. The question is: will he be able to?

Cast: Hayden Mackey and Karla Alvarez
Directed and Written by: RJ Cusyk

To begin with, tell us about your latest film “Keeping Justice”…

Keeping Justice tells the story of a young office worker named Michael Pierson who grows tired of the crime polluting his city. Despite this, he refuses to act upon his thoughts due to his moral code that murder is wrong. This moral code is called into question after he murders several gang members in an attempt to protect a young lady from being raped. Shortly after, Michael’s life is set on a downward spiral leading him to question everything he believes.

Where did the idea of the film come from? How did you get involved?

I wanted to write a vigilante story in my late teens after some friends introduced me to the anime Death Note. At the time, I was very angry about a lot in my life and started writing this very dark and dreary script. I put it on the shelf for a few years and came back to the idea and literally rewrote the entire film.

Tell us about the cast, who is performing in “Keeping Justice”?

Michael Pierson is portrayed by Hayden Mackey. I met Hayden through a project that never came to fruition called No Tomorrow, but we did manage to work together on a short film called Coffee Can. He’s been great to work with; taking direction very well and understanding what I’m asking of him (even at times when I’m not even sure myself, ha ha.) Also starring in Keeping Justice are Anna McShane and Karla Alvarez as Michael’s co-worker Karen and Michael’s apprentice/love interest Sarah, respectively. This was the first feature for both of them and they were both absolutely awesome to work with.

Interview - RJ Cusyk

What are your influences as a filmmaker?

I’m a huge fan of Akira Kurosawa and often talk trash on my own films for not being that calibre. Due to being a Kurosawa fanboy, I often focus more on human relationships and character motivations within a film than being focused on making a film just a straight up action film. Due to silent films, I’ve been trying to focus more on showing than telling. In general, I’m always finding something new that I’d like to try on my next project.

What advice would you give any up-and-coming filmmakers, trying to break in industry?

Ha ha, I figured this question would come up. I don’t really know; I tend to be awful at giving advice. I haven’t broken into the industry, at least not in my opinion. I’m just some idiot who works a 9-5 job and manages to find time to make movies in the middle of it all. I suppose if I wanted to say something inspiring I’d say something like, “If an idiot like me can make a feature length film, you can too!”

When and where can we expect to see “Keeping Justice”?

Keeping Justice is available now on Amazon Instant Video or, if you’re like me and prefer physical media, the region free DVD is available through our website:

What is the next step for you? Do you have any other films or projects in production?

My first feature film was a giallo film titled Through the Devil’s Eyes. I don’t really feel it was a satisfactory giallo and would really like to try my hand at the genre again now that I’m a bit more experienced. The title is Silver Stars on Red Velvet and I’m hoping to begin production in the summer of 2018.
