Interview - Darien Sills-Evans

To begin with, tell us about your latest film; ‘One Bedroom’…

One Bedroom is the story of a break of two thirty-something African Americans living in a gentrifying neighbourhood.  The story unfolds in flashbacks, as one of them move out. It’s a twist on the romantic-comedy genre.

Where did the idea come from? How did you get involved with the film?

Nearly everyone has heard a horrible break-up story.  I’ve merged a few of my own with others I’ve heard or witnessed. I’ve always considered what emotional roller coasters break-ups are, especially if they involve someone moving out. Often that last day in the apartment with a former lover feels like a microcosm of the whole relationship and we were trying to illustrate that.

Tell us about the cast, who is starring?

I’m in the cast as Nate. Others include Devin Nelson as Melissa, Amber Williams as Cora, Stephen Hill as Ted, and Jon Laster as Mosie. We also have two actors playing barbers who make quite an impression, Chester Sims II and Freddy Sheffield.

What are your influences as a filmmaker?

Spike Lee and Francois Trufffaut. I also enjoy Billy Wilder, Dee Rees and Mira Nair… And Marvel movies, shhhhhh.

What advice would you give any up and coming filmmakers, trying to crack the industry?

Be honest. Honest in your work, the reasons for doing your work, and in the editing of your work.

When and where can we expect to see ‘One Bedroom’?

One Bedroom is currently touring.  I believe next up is Washington D.C., then New York, Cleveland, Chicago, Michigan, and some more international screenings. Please check our social media on Instagram and Twitter, we are @onebedroommovie

What is the next step for you, do you have any other films or projects in production?

My producer, Devin Williams and I are very close to choosing our next project.
