Taglines With Tim: The Karate Kid

The Karate Kid franchise is basically Rocky for kids, complete with montages, 80’s power ballads and against all odds, underdog comebacks. When they were good they were great, but when they were bad…they sweep the leg. Lets look at some taglines. STRIKE FIRST. STRIKE HARD. NO MERCY!

The Karate Kid (1984)

Only the “old one” could teach him the secrets of the masters
I don’t think Mr. Miyagi was over keen on the nickname “the old one”. He campaigned long and hard for Captain Thunderpants but it never really took off.

He taught him the secret of Karate lies in the mind and the heart. Not in the hands.
Although personally I find the hands are quite “handy” when it comes to punching, chopping, and generally performing Karate.

The Karate Kid part II (1986)

This time the combat is real
Or as real as can be, utilizing choreography with trained actors and stuntmen. You know, like the last time.

The Kid is back
Fun fact, “the kid” Ralph Macchio was actually 25 at the time of shooting

One more lesson to share. The price of honor, the glory of friendship, and the way you must fight when only the winner survives
I don’t know about you guys but I counted at least three more lessons there, and that last lesson sounds like it requires multiple lessons in itself!

The Karate Kid Part III (1989)

First it was teacher to student. Then it was father to son. Now it’s man to man.
Nice for Macchio, now 28, to finally be referred to as “man”.

The Next Karate Kid (1994)

Who says the good guy has to be a guy?
While we’re at it, who says the Karate Kid needs to be a kid? Lets cast a 20 year old woman! It worked with Macchio!

It’s ancient wisdom against teenage spunk. 1,000 years of ancient tradition is about to get a kick in the pants!
If you take this tag line literally it’s both kinda insulting and kinda gross.

The Karate Kid (2010)

A challenge he never imagined. A teacher he never expected.
A remake that was actually alright.
