4 Standout Acting Performances From A Child Within This Decade

Acting is a difficult talent although some may disagree but to be able to pretend to be someone else and portray the emotions their character is feeling in a believable and natural way is honestly quite hard. To be able to deliver lines in a certain tone of voice and create realistic facial expressions so the viewers can understand that characters personality is not an easy task. So imagine having to do that as a child, who have less experience than their adult co-stars. However age and experience doesn’t necessarily matter when it comes to giving an incredible performance for some young actors this special talent comes naturally. Here are four good acting performances from children aged 14 and under from movies I have seen which have been released within the last 10 years. These performances really stood out for me particularly due to the challenging and mature roles they had to play.

Abigail Breslin – Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

Breslin played the young adorable, energetic and spunky beauty pageant Olive Hoover in the comedy-drama Little Miss Sunshine. Olive Hoover was the only normal person in her dysfunctional family and somehow always managed to stay cheerful despite all their troubles. Breslin was evidently the star of this movie, as it wouldn’t have been the same if Olive Hoover was played by another young actress. Her acting was never over the top and didn’t feel forced, everything she did was realistic and came naturally. At age 9, Breslin held her own while working besides more experienced actors including Steve Carell and Greg Kinnear. Throughout the movie she portrayed her emotions of excitement, confusion and nervousness excellently, that is why her performance stood out for me.

Pierce Gagnon – Looper (2012)

Out of all the performances on this list, Pierce Gagnon’s performance is the most underrated. He starred in the thought-provoking sci-fi movie Looper as Cid. Pierce Gagnon played the innocent, troubled and powerful Cid who would grow up to be the notorious and dangerous rainmaker. Gagnon got the opportunity to work with Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Emily Blunt at age 6. Even with all these big names in the movie Gagnon’s performance stood out the most for me. Every difficult and emotional line he delivered was told in such a heartfelt and convincing fashion. He was able to illustrate amazing and intimidating facial expressions whenever his character was having a telekinesis meltdown. Gagnon’s portrayal of Cid was outstanding with his realistic tantrums and poignant delivery of lines which made me sympathise for him and I was really able to understand his character.

Chloe Grace Moretz – Kick Ass (2010)

In this action-comedy movie Chloe Grace Moretz had a difficult role as Hit-girl. At age 12 playing a brutal, bloodthirsty, foul-mouthed character may be an uncomfortable role especially with your parents watching. But Moretz played a good Hit-girl, her performance stood out for me particularly due to the challenging and mature character she had to play but she did a fantastic job. Moretz effortlessly played the violent vigilante; which isn’t a surprise as she has a good amount of experience from her previous movies. She was suited for this role and played hit-girl brilliantly while delivering crude lines in a fun and quirky manner displaying all her character’s traits. She never seemed awkward or out of place in Kickass she was able to give a quality performance while working besides Nicholas Cage and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

Tye Sheridan – Mud (2012)

Sheridan gave a breath-taking performance as Ellis a brave, adventurous, caring 14 year old in the coming of age thriller Mud. For me Sheridan definitely stood out in this movie as he easily made genuine facial expressions to display each emotion of anger, happiness or sadness he felt. He delivered lines passionately with his southern accent which instantly captivated me. His role wasn’t as tough as the other actors on this list but as the main protagonist he had to give a fantastic performance and he did just that. Every word spoken, every expression made and every action carried out by Sheridan just seemed so natural. Sheridan proved he had a special talent as an actor while working besides Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon.
